CHALKUP 21 Launch

The Town Council met with other partners to celebrate the launch of the CHALKUP 21 website and trail markers. CHALKUP21 links 9 superlative 21st Century art and architecture structures along a 17 mile coastal and cultural trail stretching from Capel le Ferne to Deal together with two national long distance trails, the North Downs Way and the English Coast Path.

Each site will be marked by a specially crafted bronze plaque designed by Charles Holland – Professor of Architecture at the University of Brighton.

Professor Holland said

“This trail will rightly mark and celebrate the best new buildings and public artworks, drawing attention to the rich recent history of art, architecture and design in the area”

There are five structures in the Dover Town area,

  • The Education Shelter at Samphire Hoe
  • The Dover Sea Sports Centre on Dover Esplanade
  • The Three Waves on Dover Esplanade
  • The North Downs Way start/finish point on Dover Esplanade
  • The Dover Totems on the path from Athol Terrace to the Cliffs

Dover Arts Development instigated and managed the project with public consultation and the close cooperation of partners including the Town Council.
