A commemorative bench marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II has been installed in sight of the People of Dover’s War Memorial. Der Stadtrat von Dover finanzierte den Kauf und die Installation. The Council worked in partnership with the Dover White Cliffs Branch of the Royal British Legion to agree the location and Dover District Council gave necessary permissions. The new bench was warmly welcomed by officers of the RBL, Ted Smith (Vice Chairman), Brian Walton (Secretary) and Christine Walton (Schatzmeister), when they met the Town Mayor, Ratsmitglied Chris Edel. “I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you can see the bench near the War Memorial as you drive or walk up the High Street” said Ted Smith.
The special bench was produced by David Ogilvie in Scotland. The Town Council is waiting for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to issue final authorisation for a similar bench commemorating World War I to be installed near to the Zeebrugge Raid Memorial at St James Cemetery.
