Holocaust Memorial Day

Dover Mayor, Councillor Sue Jones represented the People of Dover at the Annual Commemoration of the Holocaust in Deal. Sue joined 80 other civic dignitaries from all over Kent to lay a wreath at the Holocaust Memorial Stone in St George’s Church Garden in remembrance of the 6 million men, women and children who died in the genocide.

The theme of this year’s event was “Torn from Home” as victims were forced out of their homes and taken to death camps.

Following the wreath laying service there was a talk by Deal Councillor Ben Bano in Deal Town Hall “Humanity in the face of Evil – Four Women confront the Holocaust”. They included Anne Frank whose diaries are world famous, Simone Weil member of the French resistance who died in Ashford, the nun Edith Stein and author Etty Hillesum both of whom died in Auschwitz.
