Dover huskede 193 Passagerer og besætning, der mistede deres liv, da Herald of Free Enterprise sank uden for Zeebrugge 30 for mange år siden natten til 6 Marts 1987 at an anniversary service at St Mary’s Church in the Town. The tragedy changed the Town forever as almost everyone in our community had family members and friends who were part of the sea-faring community. There remains a deep and abiding sadness for all whose lives were cut short and for those who continue to suffer.
Borgmesteren og borgmesteren i Dover, Councillor and Mrs Neil Rix attended the church service in Dover. On the previous day the Mayor attended the commemorations held in Zeebrugge. Neil said
“It is a privilege to participate in my official capacity in the commemorations of the terrible events of 30 år siden. The Herald of Free Enterprise disaster touched everyone in Dover – like many others in our town I remember exactly where I was and who I was speaking to when the newsflash came over the radio”
The events of that night will never be forgotten.
