דובר פסטיבל סרטים – Films 2019 ו 40 years ago in 1979

Dover Film Festival is underway at the Silver Screen Cinema showing the all best of Dover from 2019 including the opening of the new Dover Pier, the Community Regatta, civic events such as the installation of the Town Mayor and ending up with the fun of the Christmas Lights switch-on and the Boxing Day Dip. It’s a joint effort including two of the Town’s Honorary Freemen, Mr Mike McFarnell who manages the team of dedicated volunteers who record throughout the year and Mr Graham Tuthill who wrote the script.

And this year from the Ray Warner archives a unique chance to see the Dover Film 1979 – now in 2 parts but happily re-united for the first time in decades. The film had been separated to enable the late Queen Mother to have her own special showing of footage of her installation as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports during the year. Her Majesty arrived and left on the Royal Yacht Britannia and the event included a horse drawn carriage drive and mounted military procession from Dover Castle through the Town. In the rest of the film we can see that January 1979 started with deep snow and sledging in Connaught Park but there was plenty of sun later in the year for summer fun in the Town. And not be left out Honorary Freeman Mr Terry Sutton has re-written his original script to provide a new voice over for the 1979 film.

As a bonus this year there is a short film of the canoe journey along the River Dour made by 2 Dover College pupils in 1979 together with the same journey made by 2 current pupils. It’s a chance to see what has changed and be thankful that some of the most beautiful stretches of our river have stayed the same.
