A special World War 1 commemorative bench has been installed at St James Cemetery overlooking the final resting place of the men who gave their lives in the raid on Zeebrugge on 23 Април 1918, Гергьовден. Admiral Lord Keyes who led the raid is buried near the men he commanded. The bravery of the men taking part in the attack was so great that 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded. The raid is remembered on the anniversary each year in a ceremony at the Cemetery. This is followed by a further act of commemoration at Dover Town Hall where, и тогава, the Town Mayor strikes the Zeebrugge Bell which hangs permanently on the balcony at the front of the Hall. The bell was the gift of the King of the Belgians to the Town of Dover. Dover Town Council funded the purchase and installation of the bench and worked in partnership with the Dover White Cliffs Branch of the Royal British Legion to agree the location and Dover District Council who gave necessary permissions.
