Somme Commemorative Parade

The Town Council supports Dover’s Royal British Legion

Dover’s Royal British Legion has been unanimously supported by the Civic and Special Projects Committee with a full grant of £2,250 to cover the costs of the Somme Commemorative parade and reception planned for Saturday 31 Juli.

The Battle of the Somme in 2016 at the height of the First World War was one of the most terrible days in the history of the British Army with over 60,000 soldiers killed or wounded. Many of the wounded would have travelled through Dover on their way to hospital only yards from where the parade will remember their bravery and sacrifice.

The Town Council is honoured to support the commemoration on behalf of the Town.

Last year the Town Council welcomed the formation of the new Dover White Cliff’s Branch of the Royal British Legion in the Town. The Council presented the Branch with its Official Standard and worked in partnership with the Branch on commemorative events including the annual Remembrance Sunday service.
