Alongside the historic People of Dover War Memorial, the adjacent Remembrance Garden is lovingly maintained by a small gardening team, whose work ensures these heritage spaces remain peaceful, dignified, and welcoming all year round.
The Doveras kara memoriāla cilvēki, a Grade I listed structure, honours the men and women of the town who gave their lives in conflict. Installed after the First World War and later expanded, it remains a focal point of Dover’s historical identity. Nearby, the Remembrance Garden, part of the town centre’s wider heritage landscape and in the vicinity of the Grade II listed Maison Dieu House and Dover Town Hall in this historic quarter, serves as a green sanctuary – encapsulating memories, honouring families of the fallen, and offering space for reflection.
These spaces are not dormant outside of November. They are alive with meaning throughout the year – quietly marking the past. In winter, the gardens are sensitively lit, ensuring they remain a visible part of our town’s landscape, offering a moment of stillness amidst the bustle.
Dover Town Council takes great care to steward this corner of heritage. In assisting with the Royal British Legion Dover Branch, the memorial serves as the site for important civic events and Dover Town Council very own hosted memorial events such as the Zēbriges reida piemiņai each April, un Piemiņas svētdiena in November. These moments unite community, military, and civic voices in shared remembrance.
Yet even when no ceremonies are scheduled, the work continues. Because remembrance, for Dover, isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s a responsibility carried week by week, flower by flower, name by name.
